Only a couple of days ago I was chatting on twitter about not having seen a kittiwake at the flat. Someone had had 10 following a ship at East Tilbury, not too far as the kittiwake flies, but despite checking the ships that pass the flat, we've never had any. This morning, while I was nursing a christmas-eve-eve night out hangover, one of the regular ships, Sand Fulmar, went upriver on the rising tide. It was followed by an enormous group of mixed gulls. In this group, hugging fairly close to the ship itself, were at least 12 kittiwakes. Brilliant.
Yeah, merry christmas and all that.
